Determinants of poverty among rural farming households in Maiha Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Nigeria

Abstract Poverty is a critical factor affecting subsistence of farmers in Nigeria, especially rural areas. The study examined determinants poverty among farming households Adamawa State, Nigeria. Specifically, the research objectives were to: describe socio-economic characteristics respondents, determine status and examine respondents. Primary data used for studies generated from 255 who selected using multi-stage random sampling technique. analytical tools descriptive, Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT), Logit regression models. findings revealed that majority (90.98 %) household heads men, married (90.20 with mean age 38.42 years, educated (76.48 %), farm size 2.65 ha 5 people. (85.88 respondents had no access to credit. further respondents’ distributions by 0.42, 0.23, 0.16 incidence (Po), depth (P1), severity (P2), respectively. result model sex, formal education, primary occupation, credit, total income, annual remittances positive influence on status, while age, marital negative statistically significant at various levels. Hence recommends need have credit schemes. This could increase off-farm activities generate more income thereby reduce their poverty.
